[Profile]
Yutaka Iwata was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1972, and in 2000 he started working at a musical instrument factory, where he began making classical guitars. In 2000, he started working at a musical instrument factory, where he began making classical guitars. In 2008,
he moved to Barcelona, Spain, where he visited local maker Raul Yagüe, who encouraged him to work in the workshop of Santiago de Cecilia (a collaboration between Maria Cecilia Saenz Rols and Juan Santiago Canals). He joined them and has been working with them ever since. He established his own workshop in 2018, where he produces his own original models alongside his work with Santiago de Cecilia. He says his work is “a fusion of the meticulous techniques he learned in Japan and the rich, traditional artistry handed down in Spain.” Moreover, it is a highly accomplished instrument born of a flexible response to modern needs in construction methods and playability. His instruments are characterized by their modest and quiet power, without being heaped with flamboyant elements, and have been highly acclaimed in his home country of Spain and elsewhere.
He was featured in the Antonio de Torres documentary “LA ESPAÑOLA, LA DE TORRES”in 2020, co-directed by Fran Lopez Montoro and Raul Enrique Navarro (both directors are Torres' great-grandsons, according to the film). He also won the Antonio Marin Montero International Guitar Making Competition in Granada in 2021.

[Description]
Yutaka Iwata's new double-top model No. 32 for 2024 has just arrived. This model has a sound board (double top) made of Nomex, a honeycomb-like synthetic fiber sheet (a material developed by Dupont with excellent heat and flame resistance), sandwiched between two pieces of Canadian cedar wood. The body is laminated with different woods: Indian rosewood on the outside and MacArthur Ebony (striped ebony) on the inside. The fingerboard is a raised fingerboard that is slightly raised above the sound board after the 12th fret (actually, the fingerboard is raised by sloping the sound board).
The sound here is more lucid than the raw, powerful sound one might expect from the combination of cedar and double top. It is not a diffuse sound, as is often the case with double-tops, but rather a natural sound that is appropriately tight and glossy enough.
