[Profile]
Born in 1951 in Virginia, USA. He is one of the most important makers of modern flamenco guitars, and currently maintains a workshop in California. Originally an aspiring performer,he became fascinated by the Santos Hernandez (1874-1943), used by his guitar teacher, and went on to make guitars. His production aesthetic was based on Santos'guitars and modernized them in his own way, resulting in a highly refined guitar in terms of functionality, balance, and tone that is typical of an American maker. In 1975, he launched his own
brand, and now produces flamenco models as well as classical models. His work became a favorite of many guitarists, including such virtuosos as Sabicas, Paco de Lucia, and Vicente Amigo, as an instrument that could simultaneously express Gypsy emotion and jazz-like acoustic space.
[Description]
We are pleased to announce the arrival of a flamenco negra (black) spruce/indian rosewood piece made by Lester Devoe in 2004. This is an attractive piece with the extremely high functionality characteristic of the brand and with all the necessary atmosphere for a flamenco guitar. He follows the Spanish style in the internal construction, but often uses different constructions for the same model, and also tries different approaches in acoustic design. His works have a certain American (West Coast) clarity, but in this piece, a characteristic woody sound is evident, with a calmness of expression and flamenco dynamism that is appealing. Another of his characteristics, acoustic functionality,is also evident in this piece, with a well-defined overall balance, clear responsiveness, and a heavy feeling in the rasgueado. The acoustic design is truly pleasing, from the firm bass to the clean, glossy treble. Players who prefer sharpness and high resolution may have different tastes, but this is a guitar with very high potential as a flamenco guitar.
The area from the sides of the fingerboard to the soundhole area has minor dings and scratches, but they are minor for a flamenco that is 20 years old. The lower part of the saddle has scratches from string changes, and the bass side edge of the soundhole has wear from playing. There is a crack about 10 cm long along the bass side edge of the bridge, but it has not reached the inside.
