[Profile]
Tobias Braun, born in 1960 in Holzminden, Germany, grew up in Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna. He began crafting guitars in 1983, later studying under master luthier Jose Luis Romanillos. Over the years, Braun attended several of Romanillos’ courses in Spain, Belgium, and Austria, eventually earning his Meister Certificate in 1990. Braun’s expertise grew, and in 1992, he became Romanillos’ assistant. In 1998, he relocated his workshop to the Vienna Woods, where he still works today. Braun is also active in education, founding N.I.C.E. and conducting lectures and workshops internationally.
Although Romanillos profoundly influenced his work, Braun also drew inspiration from luthiers such as Torres, Ramirez, Santos Hernandez, and Hermann Hauser I. His replicas of their masterpieces are highly esteemed for their beauty and sound quality worldwide. Recently, he co-authored books on Vicente Arias and Santos Hernandez in the Guitar Writers Series by Camono Verde.
[Description]
We are excited to present a 2019 Tobias Braun-crafted replica of a 1924 Santos Hernandez guitar. Braun, having repaired the original Santos Hernandez owned by renowned Austrian guitarist Luise Walker, meticulously studied this iconic instrument. The replica mirrors the Santos’ sound, combining rich bass, clear treble, and a dense tone despite the cypress wood. Its lively resonance and responsive touch make it a highly expressive guitar.
The design follows Santos’ classic combination of spruce and cypress, with a three-piece back and a Manuel Ramirez-style headstock. The rosette features a ribbon pattern, and the elegant shellac finish completes the look. In excellent condition with only minor scratches, it has no major repairs or cracks. The label, marked '43% RH,' may indicate the relative humidity in which it was stored or crafted.
