[Profile]
Pedro Contreras Valbuena (1937-2007) was born in Alicante, Spain. In 1951, he entered the workshop of Jose Ramirez II in Madrid as an apprentice and learned the craft, but in 1956, he moved to Brazil with his brother Alfonso Contreras Valbuena and opened his own workshop there (although during this period, he mainly worked with mass-produced brands such as Di Giorgio and Gianini). After Ramirez II died in 1957 and Ramirez III took over the workshop, he returned to Madrid in 1962 to work again at the Ramirez workshop, where he became one of the brand's flagship models, the 1A, not as an apprentice but as a master craftsman. He was allowed to stamp the initials “PC” inside the guitars he built. In 1986, after becoming independent from Ramirez, he opened a workshop in Madrid and began producing guitars under his own label. This was preceded by his son Pedro Contreras Perez, who had begun his apprenticeship under his father three years earlier, so the workshop was actually started by father and son. He has also been in contact with Arcangel Fernandez, and has produced workshop models at Arcangel's request (using a different label design than the famous Para Casa Arcangel label). Some documents mention that he had a relationship with the master craftsman Marcelo Barbero I during his lifetime (he helped at the workshop), but the details are unknown. However, in 1956, the year Barbero I died, Valbuena chose to leave the Ramirez workshop and head for Brazil, which is assumed to have been a turning point for him. Valbuena was originally deeply influenced by Torres and Santos Hernandez. Perhaps because of his own qualities, his work has a subdued calmness, even in Ramirez's 1A and in his own original models. He produced attractive instruments with the Madrid-like power, and was a very popular brand in Japan during his lifetime.
[Description]
This is a 1992 classic model by Pedro Contreras Valbuena I. The label reads 'Pedro Valbuena construida para Arcangel Fernandez,' and although Valbuena's own name is printed larger, this piece was produced as a so-called Arcangel workshop piece. The sound is hard and rigid like Arcangel Fernandez's, but it is more modest and delicate than Arcangel's. It is more like a Ramirez PC-stamped spruce guitar.
It is in good condition with no cracks or other major repairs. There are a few marks where a removable golpe board was applied to the treble side of the soundhole, partial repairs to dents on the bass side of the soundhole and near the bottom, and touch-up marks under the bridge, but none of these damage the appearance of the guitar.
