[Profile]
Born in Nagoya in 1939, he entered his father Kanoh Mokumei's workshop in 1958 at the
age of 19 and learned to make guitars. 1966, he became independent and started making
instruments under his own brand, and since then he has been shipping high-quality
instruments with great enthusiasm, making him one of the oldest veteran guitar makers in
Japan. In addition to guitars, he also makes mandolins, lutes, and other ancient
instruments, and is highly regarded in each genre. His classical guitars are characterized
by a modest, even stoic tone, rich sound, and elegance, while aiming for a Spanish
orthodox sound. The lineup includes a variety of short-scale models, especially in the 610-
640 mm range, and is considered a pioneer in this category of high-end models in Japan.
[Description]
We are pleased to announce the arrival of Kodama Kanoh's No. 120, made in 1991, No.
1005, an official outlet of the brand. This is a valuable piece that was stocked at the
workshop of Kodama Kanoh, who retired last year at the end of 2023, and has been in the
collection for 30 years since its production. The label has his name written in Kanji brush
style, which is earlier than the alphabetical label design he used for 20 years until his
retirement. The sound board is made of Romanian spruce, and the back and sides are
made of quarter-sawn Central and South American rosewood.
Since the 2000s, Kanoh has been making clear-sounding instruments that modestly
combine German/Spanish acoustics within his own tastes, but this 1999 model is
characterized by a soft reverberant resonance. It has a unique deep resonance.
Although it has been over 30 years since it was made, the neck remains straight.
There is a slight scratch on the sound board. This model was priced at 1,200,000 yen at the
time of its release and is offered at an outlet price. Case is sold separately.
